MoneyFail #4 – You’re Going Too Fast Dummy!

by Charles on January 24, 2012 · 10 comments

I got mad at my wife couple months ago when we received two speeding citations in the mail in one week. She was caught by a speed camera on two consecutive days as she was driving to her school destination. I told her to stop speeding! Then, I had to eat my own words when I received a speeding citation in the mail last week for going 69 in a 55 mph zone. I was also a victim of a speed camera. I apologized to my wife for yelling her at couple months back.

Our total fine for the three citations were $120, only $40 each. Nothing to go bankrupt on, but it’s $120 out of our pockets. It’s $120 that we can use towards something else, something that we need, like a new coffee table that we’ve been shopping for as of late. But instead, we had to pay the government for speeding above the limit. We didn’t even get a chance to talk our way out of the speeding tickets. We were definitely being dumb with our money. In Maryland where we currently reside, the total revenue from speeding cameras almost reached $77,000,000 in 2011. That’s a $77 million industry! Some 1.9 million citations were issued last year in Maryland. And that’s only in Maryland! That means, there’s a ton of drivers out there that are speeding like crazy and wasting money by getting caught by these speed cameras. Do yourself a favor and drive slower. Don’t be dumb with your money by driving too fast.

This is the latest edition of our new series called MoneyFail.

Wow, speeding cameras. It is a good thing they don’t have those here or we would have to set up a payment plan. Do they warn you where these cameras are located or is it like losing the lottery?

some speeding cameras are at fixed location and you just have to know them. there’s a website that lists all the locations where they are installed. But there are other situations where they use a moving van with camera installed on top of the vans. They just sit on the side of the road so it looks like a broken down van instead of a speed trap!!

That’s terrible. There ought to be a law against that.

I’m lucky they don’t have speed cameras here. I haven’t received a speeding ticket in decades but it isn’t because I never speed. If the cameras come here I’ll have to be much more aware of my speed.

We have camera here and have for at least 6 years or so and let me tell you they cost me a fortune at first. I have since cleaned up my driving now and no longer speed. Much safer and cheaper.

I got one of those like 10 years ago. Haven’t seen one around for a long time. I think we voted them out or something like that. We only have red light cameras now. Will those 3 tickets drive up the price of car insurance?

no, the tickets don’t count against anything except my wallet. the state only cares about revenue. they have plans to install more this year. SIGH!

Avoiding traffic citations are one of those things that are entirely within our control. I almost got busted the other day when I had a forgetful moment. 80 mph on the freeway, and next thing I know there’s a patrol car behind me. Fortunately, he must have gotten a call because he passed around me and sped on his way.

Speeding tickets and parking fines are just a waste especially since they can be prevented. Im glad that you at least apologized to her since you ended up getting one yourself. 120 isnt bad compared to the one my wife got for driving in the HOV lane.
